Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about calculating weighted grades, final exams, and GPA scales.

What's my GPA calculator: How does this tool determine my Grade Point Average?
A 'what's my GPA calculator' computes your Grade Point Average by multiplying the grade point numerical value of each course (e.g. A = 4.0, B = 3.0, C = 2.0) by its assigned credit hours to determine total quality points. It then divides your total quality points by total credit hours attempted: GPA = Total Quality Points ÷ Total Credits.
GPA what if calculator: How do I test hypothetical grade outcomes?
Our interactive GPA What-If Simulator lets you model future scenarios instantly. Move the hypothetical term average slider or click the preset benchmark cards (2.50, 3.00, 3.50, or 4.00 Straight A's) to see immediately how your overall cumulative GPA shifts based on your current credit history.
What will my GPA be calculator: How do I project my cumulative GPA after this semester?
To calculate what your cumulative GPA will be, enter your Current Cumulative GPA and Prior Completed Credits into the 'Transcript Sync' section above, then list your current semester classes and expected grades. Grade Calcy automatically combines your prior transcript points with your new semester points to project your updated overall GPA.
How much will my GPA go up calculator: Can a 4.0 semester significantly raise my GPA?
How much your GPA increases depends on how many completed credits you already have. For example, if you have 30 completed credits with a 3.20 GPA, earning straight A's (4.0) in a 15-credit semester will raise your cumulative GPA by +0.27 points to 3.47 GPA. If you are a senior with 90 completed credits, that same 15-credit 4.0 semester raises your GPA by only +0.11 points to 3.31 GPA.
What does credits mean in GPA calculator?
In a GPA calculator, credits (also known as credit hours, unit hours, or semester hours) represent the mathematical weight of a course. A standard lecture class is typically 3 credits, a laboratory science class is 4 credits, and an elective seminar is 1 or 2 credits. Higher-credit courses generate more quality points and exert a vastly greater mathematical influence on your final GPA.
What is the difference between weighted and unweighted high school GPA?
An unweighted GPA is calculated on a 4.0 scale regardless of class difficulty (an A is always a 4.0). A weighted GPA awards extra grade points for advanced courses: Honors courses receive +0.5 points (A = 4.5), and Advanced Placement (AP), International Baccalaureate (IB), and Dual Enrollment courses receive +1.0 points (A = 5.0).
Do colleges look at weighted or unweighted GPA?
College admissions committees review both. They look at your unweighted GPA to evaluate your baseline academic consistency, and they examine your weighted GPA and curriculum rigor to verify that you challenged yourself with AP, IB, and honors courses.
