Understanding the 4.0 Grade Point Average Formula
Your Grade Point Average (GPA) evaluates your academic performance by standardizing letter grades into numerical quality points and weighting them by credit hours.
Core Mathematical Formula:
GPA = Total Quality Points ÷ Total Credit Hours Attempted
Where: Quality Points = Σ (Course Grade Value × Course Credit Hours)
Why Credit Hours Matter
Courses carry different academic loads. Earning an "A" in a 4-credit laboratory science course yields 16.0 quality points (4.0 × 4), whereas an "A" in a 1-credit physical education elective yields only 4.0 quality points. Higher credit courses carry four times the mathematical influence on your term and cumulative GPA.
